Riding for breast cancer research
Dan MacLennan, Courier-IslanderPublished: Friday, May 15, 2009
Campbell River's Tanya Loiselle heads out of town on her motorcycle tomorrow to take part in a women's cross continent ride to raise money for breast cancer research.
She's heading for the Harley Davidson mecca of Sturgis, South Dakota to meet her friend Tannis Fuhr, known as "Flo", and escort her home along with other riders as part of the Women Who Ride Conga for Cancer.
That's farther than Loiselle's ever gone before.
"I like a challenge," she said Wednesday. "I've been looking at the forecast every day hoping it's going to change and currently they're actually forecasting snow in one stop already. I'm like, 'Oh My God!'"
The idea started last year when Fuhr bought a Harley and decided to ride it home from Florida rather than having it shipped. Friends and family were concerned about her riding across the country on her own, so she ended up with assistance from many of the friends she had made on an on-line forum know as Women Who Ride. The forum members banded together to give her an escort and the WWR Conga was born. Along the way she raised a small amount of funds that she donated to the Cancer Society in memory of her riding instructor.
Now Fuhr's doing it again. She left Florida May 9 on the WWR "Go With the Flo" Conga 2, hoping to raise $10,000 for breast cancer research. They've already raised more than $6,000. They're stopping at Harley Davidson dealerships along the way. Dealerships have been contributing funds and donating items for auction.
Loiselle expects to meet Fuhr in Sturgis next Thursday with plans to return to the Island and Campbell River June 1.
"There are quite a few people from all over the Island, lady riders who are going to be joining us as we get off the ferry in Victoria," Loiselle said.
As for the departure, "I'm leaving the Shell station in Willow Point at 2 p.m. (Saturday)," she said. "I'll be there by 1:30 if anybody wants to come and visit and say hello."
